"We were in an ANR for about a year — I was producing well — but life got in the way and we had to stop for several months. We want to start again but I'm worried we'll have to go through the whole induction process from scratch."

Good news: the second time is almost always easier and faster than the first.

Why It's Easier the Second Time

Your body remembers. The mammary tissue you developed during your first induction doesn't completely disappear when you stop nursing. It does regress — your breasts will have returned to something closer to their pre-lactation state — but the underlying tissue retains a kind of memory. The pathways have been built before, and rebuilding them is faster than building them from nothing.

This process is called relactation, and it's meaningfully different from inducing for the first time. Most women who have previously lactated see milk return within 2–6 weeks of resuming regular stimulation. Some see it within days.

How to Start Again

Treat it like a fresh start, but with realistic optimism. Resume regular nursing sessions — twice a day minimum, more if you can. Add pumping between sessions if possible. The consistency matters just as much the second time, even though the timeline is shorter.

Your let-down reflex may take a little while to re-establish. Don't be discouraged if the first few sessions don't produce anything visible. Your body needs a few days to recognise the signal and start responding again.

The Emotional Side

Starting again after a break can feel strange — there might be guilt about stopping, anxiety about whether it'll work, or a sense of having lost something. Those feelings are valid and common.

Try to approach it as a new chapter rather than picking up where you left off. You're both different people than you were before the break. The relationship may have shifted. Let the ANR evolve with you rather than trying to recreate exactly what you had.

What Helped Before Will Help Again

Whatever worked during your first induction — particular supplements, timing, positions, routines — is worth trying again. Your body responded to those things once and is likely to respond again. If you kept notes, now's the time to revisit them.
