Q: Is it safe to swallow breast milk?
"Is it actually safe to swallow breast milk? My partner has been producing for a few months and we're both curious but neither of us knows the answer."
Yes — for healthy adults in a healthy nursing relationship, swallowing breast milk is safe.
What Breast Milk Is
Breast milk is a food. It's produced by the human body specifically to be consumed. It contains water, fats, proteins, sugars, antibodies, and a range of bioactive compounds — none of which are harmful to adults. The idea that it's somehow unsafe for adults to ingest is not based in biology.
Adults digest breast milk the same way they digest any other food. The antibodies and immune factors in breast milk are designed for infant gut absorption and won't have the same effects in an adult digestive system — but they're also not harmful. They're simply processed as protein.
When to Be More Cautious
A few situations where it's worth thinking more carefully:
If the nursing partner has a transmissible infection. Some infections can be present in breast milk, including HIV and certain other viruses. If there's any question about either partner's health status, it's worth knowing before consuming milk. In a stable, committed relationship where both partners know their status, this is typically not a concern.
If the nursing partner is on medication. Some medications pass into breast milk. Whether the amounts are significant enough to affect an adult who consumes small quantities depends on the specific medication. If you're uncertain, LactMed (the US National Library of Medicine's lactation database) has detailed information on medication transfer into milk, and a healthcare provider can advise further.
If there's any sign of mastitis or infection in the breast. Milk from an actively infected breast may contain bacteria at elevated levels. It's advisable to avoid consuming milk from an affected side while treating an active infection. See our guide on mastitis and clogged ducts for more.
The Short Version
For two healthy adults in a stable relationship with no relevant health concerns: yes, swallowing breast milk is safe. It's nutritious, it's natural, and it's been part of ANR relationships for as long as ANR relationships have existed.
